Match Reports

30/4/06 Pirates 0 Newquay 5

This was a tough game, our side running the county champions mightily close.

We were resolute at the start, but capitalising on a wayward pass the visitors made a crucial score just a minute before half-time. The second half saw some enterprising rugby by both teams, but neither was able to cross the white line.

In a second fixture the Pirates lost by 4 tries to 1, our sole effort scored by Dylan Williams following a jinking run.

17/4/06 U9s play in Kenwyn Tournament

With the emphasis on fun, coach Sean Hickman ensured all his squad had a good run out in the mini-rugby tournament held at Kenwyn before the Cornish Pirates game against Plymouth Albion on Easter Monday.

Looking jaded, perhaps after having played two long tournaments in the previous seven days, we went down to Launceston in our opener by 2 tries to nil, with this followed by a another tough contest against Plymouth Albion who beat us by just the one solitary try.

In our final match against Redruth we were a try down at half-time, but then reacted to a no nonsense interval talk to play with increased determination and control in the second period. The scoring of an equalising try was richly deserved, some excellent driving play from our forwards rewarded when Max Berryman crashed over the line.

16/4/06 U9s at St. Austell Festival

Playing in the annual festival at St. Austell, the Pirates played in a pool of 5 teams, them getting off to a good start in their opener against Newquay when Dylan Williams scored a breakaway try. However, they could not hold on to the lead as their strong opponents scored three second half tries.

Next up were hosts St. Austell, a single dart for the line by fly-half Elliott Nicholls securing victory for our side. A close fought game Saltash then followed, their one score being enough to put them in the final against Newquay.

Our last game of the afternoon was played against Truro, it being a case of saving our best until last in an impressive 30-5 win. Elliott Nicholls was again on the score-sheet, his running skills enabling him to notch up a hat-trick, with other tries scored by Jake Carley, Michael Durbin and Matthew Dale.

12/3/06 - Pirates 30 - Helston 5

The players performed well in the wet, their driving play creating four tries for Max Berryman. Reuben Mzera tidied plenty of loose ball, and there were some fine tackling displays from Matt Dale, Alex Durrant and Elliott Nicholls

Try-scorers were Max Berryman (4), Reuben Mzera and Henry Monk.

5/3/06 - Lankelly-Fowey 0 - Pirates 10

Playing the Lankelly side at Wadebridge, we did well to secure a win against useful opponents.

5/3/06 - Wadebridge 5 Pirates 20

Showing our strength in depth, this was another really good win against a strong home side who were the first to score. We equalised before the break, and then proceeded to dominate in the second period. One of our try-scorers was James Stacey, it being his first in a Pirates shirt.

Try-scorers - Max Berryman (2), Alex Durrant, James Stacey.

12/2/06 - Pirates 10 - Lankelly-Fowey 10

The game against a robust visiting side was as close as the scoreline suggests, with both of our tries being scored by Max Berryman.

Michael Durbin proved an able ball carrier in our pack, whilst backs Michael May, Alex Durrant, Connor Bick and Brad Morris all tackled well.

5/2/06 - Pirates 30 - Wadebridge 0

Playing open running rugby our team was too strong for the plucky visitors. Connor Bick and Reuben Mzera were inspiring ball winners,

with possession gained used to obvious good effect. Try-scorers were Max Berryman (3), Henry Monk, Reuben Mzera and Michael Durbin.

A short match for our Development side followed, them losing by a solitary try despite the defensive efforts of Kyle Gribble and James Stacey.

29/1/06 - The Pirates overcame a spirited Penryn side to win by 8 tries to 2, them now playing high quality rugby once more. Max Berryman continues to make some determined runs and is finding good support from wings Michael May and Jake Carley, with Alex Durrant conspicuous in open play. Up front Joel Nicholas, Connor Bick and Matthew Dale showed solid support at the breakdown, allowing scrum-half Elliott Nicholls to open play up for the backs. Try-scorers were Max Berryman (5), Alex Durrant (2), Michael May.

22/1/06 - Falmouth 20 - Pirates 15

In a close contest the Pirates put up another excellent performance, and were unlucky to lose. There was more continuity in the boys play, with some good passing out of the tackle and some incisive running from Jake Carley and Connor Bick. Behind the breakdown Elliott Nicholls made some good breaks with support from Joel Nicholas and Michael May. Excellent defensive work from Matt Dale and some truly text-book tackles from Henry Monk, who also scored our first try, saw the ball spilled by Falmouth with the Pirates capitalising with further tries from Elliott Nicholls and Reuben Mzera.

8/1/06 - Redruth v Pirates

Our side suffered a narrow defeat, but with the hard work and commitment put in at training there was evidence of better things to come.

Everyone contributed, but special mention is due Henry Monk and Reuben Mzera who ran and tackled well in their first matches.

Congratulations to Brad Morris who scored his first try, with two also coming from Alex Durrant.

11/12/05 - Newquay v Pirates

No matter that our team was beaten on the day, the lads simply welcoming the opportunity to get back into match action, having not played for several weeks. Newquay were well-organised, arriving at half-time comfortably in the lead. In the second half, however, our tackling and rucking was fully committed, the improvement enabling us to cross for two tries, both scored by Connor Bick.
