Henley Sevens July 2006

Henley Sevens Latest

The Pirates select a young & exciting squad for Sunday's Tournament,

Rhodri McAtee

Former England 7s player Duncan Roke, aged 32, will be the daddy of the party, the rest having an average age of just 21.

Included among them will be Rhodri McAtee, a hat-trick performer when beating Northampton Saints in last years final, the Welsh flyer later representing his country in this years Commonwealth Games, James Moore who has been a member of the England 7s training squad, and Chris Cracknell, a Young England 7s player.

Chris will be celebrating his twenty-second birthday on Sunday so to retain the trophy won at the first attempt last year would provide a suitable present.

The full squad is Duncan Roke, Rhodri McAtee, Chris Cracknell, Sam Betty, Matt Evans, Lewis Vinnicombe, Sam Parsons, Lewis Webb, Owen Hambly, James Moore.

The Cornish Pirates were delighted to lift the prestigious Henley International Sevens trophy last year.

Participating in the competition for the first time they sensationally beat Northampton Saints 31-17 in the final, scoring five tries in the process, including a hat-trick from Rhodri McAtee.

The young Welshman was in outstanding form, it coming as no surprise that he was later selected to play for Wales and represent his country in the Commonwealth Games.

If anything, the Pirates could have at their disposal an even stronger squad than they had last season, with the possibility that Jonny Hylton - recently signed from Worcester - who has played for England Sevens, could join McAtee and other quality performers up for selection.

As for other sides taking part at Henley on Sunday 6th. August, Northampton will be keen to exact revenge, whilst stiff opposition will also come from the likes of Bristol, the British Army, Samurai International, and Worcester.

It is expected that a fair number of Pirates fans will travel to Henleys Dry Leas ground on the day, the event kicking off at 10a.m., with the final scheduled for 7p.m.
