Club History - Players - Brian Monckton

Brian Monckton

Affectionately referred to as Monk, Brian was for many years a great stalwart of the club.

On the playing side he was a robust and mobile forward who played in both the back and front rows, and he had a very good knowledge of the game. He also enjoyed playing water polo.

A time-served mason, Brian played for our 1st. XV direct from the Colts at a time when our strong side contained many distinguished players.

He was our Vice-Captain in both 1964-65 and 1965-66, and he played once for Cornwall, but a serious knee injury in his mid-twenties curtailed his rugby playing ambitions.

However, he doggedly continued to support the Pirates both on and off the field, and in helping the reserve teams he still managed to play his 300th. game for the club in 1980-81.

Brian Monckton

A charismatic individual with a wry sense of humour, Brian enjoyed the social side of club life, but he also understood how important it was for people to stand up and take on responsibilities virtues no doubt handed him by his father Bill.

Brian was a committee man who became Team Secretary and then Chairman of the club in 1990-91, a post he held before his untimely passing at the age of just 50.
