Ashley Lawton
Ashley Lawton looks for support

Helping to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, this match played at the Mennaye Field last Sunday proved a worthy event, with there a mix of aspiring youth and experienced performers involved.

Because of the actual number of players wishing to participate, it was decided to play this game in four quarters, thus giving time for changes to be suitably made.

There was just one score in the opening period, it a first try for the pink-shirted All Stars in their first ever match. Lock Neil Corin was the man to make the historic touchdown, it following a surging midfield burst by centre Ashley Lawton.

Camborne fly-half Dave Mankee, who was guesting for the Pirates Amateurs, kicked two penalties in the second quarter, but flanker Louis Stevens powered over for a try at the scoreboard corner as the visitors snatched back the lead in the next period.

Harlequins Amateurs 31 Pirates Amateurs 21

30th March, 2008

A noon kick-off was a tall order for the Pirates after a night at Kempton Park races, it a situation exacerbated by the fact the team also had just 13 fit players to take on theirs 'Quins' counterparts.

Watching the game played at Teddington was former England captain Bill Beaumont, whose son played at hooker for the hosts, the large crowd enjoying the contest.

The Pirates led 21-14 at the break, before injuries took their toll when 'Pup' Gwennap and Des O'Connell had to go off. With a player also sin-binned the Pirates played with just 10 men for a spell, it perhaps no surprise that the Quins, who only had 14 players themselves, ultimately emerged winners of a hard-fought match.

Tries for the Pirates were scored by prop Treve Williams, wing Phil Grey and centre Tom McFadden. Lock Scott Powell slotted two conversions, with there one also successfully kicked by fly-half Andrew Snell.

Pirates Amateurs: M. Osborne, T. McFadden, D. O'Connell, P. Grey, A. Snell, G. Tackle, S., Dugdale, R. Sharp, S. Powell, D. Lawrence, T. Williams, A. Gwennap, M. Blewett.

Pirates Amateurs 29 Imperial Medicals 42

22nd March, 2008

The Pirates performed well in this match against the very useful Imperial Medicals team who were on their annual Easter tour to Cornwall.

To lose 29-42 was certainly no disgrace, both sides playing some fine rugby on a windy day. In total the Pirates crossed for five tries in the match, with there a brace for flanker Wayne Davey.

Pirates Amateurs: A. Weston, D. Hewett, S. Bryant, D. O'Connell, P. Grey, A. Snell, T. Dugdale, S. Powell, M. Pascoe, W. Davey, M. Rashleigh, D. Lawrence, D. Lugg, N. Turner, J. Gwennap.

Pirates Amateurs 32 Newquay 2nds 11

15th March, 2008

The Pirates made a good start in this game played on the Mennaye Nurseries field, with lock Dave Lawrence and prop Wayne Davey carrying the ball strongly, before wing Phil Grey then ripped the ball out of a maul to run in unopposed for a try.

In total the Pirates scored six tries in the match, including an outstanding effort from 60 metres out by replacement Danny Hewett, who could be forgiven for appreciating advantage of the slight slope in his favour.

Pirates Amateurs: B. Quick, P. Grey, T. McFadden, N. Rees, N. Hosking, A. Snell, A. Weston, S. Powell, M. Pascoe, G. Pye, D. Lawrence, M. Greig, W. Davey (capt), S. Dugdale, J. Gwennap.

The Pirates Amateurs lost their first Merit table game of the season to a very strong Wadebridge team who led 11-0 at the break.

In the second half the Pirates were much improved, and came back into the match with a well taken try scored by centre Tom McFadden, but it was not enough as their hosts managed to cross the line once more to emerge worthy victors.

Pirates Amateurs: T. Dugdale, E. Skewes, T. McFadden, D. O'Connell, D. Hewett, A. Snell, A. Weston, M. Pascoe, M. Rashleigh, T. Hands (capt), M. Greig, Z. Harris, J. Gwennap, A. Gwennap, D. Lugg.

Pirates Amateurs 54 Brooksy's Barbarians 20

26th December 2007

This Boxing Day friendly provided great entertainment at the Mennaye Field during the Christmas Holiday period.

Included in the Barbarians side were a number of former 'Pirate' stars such as Simon Stone and Keith Terry, plus several 'exiles' who were enjoying a seasonal break. St. Just & Cornwall cricketer Nick George played at full-back, and there was an appearance from the bench of Brooksy himself - who still managed to look as clean and tidy at the end, as when he had started. Nothing has changed!

Full-back Ben Quick notched up a hat-trick of tries for the Amateurs, all involved also wishing him well before his posting overseas with the Marines.

Peter Lugg refereed most of the match, before then playing for the Barbarians team as a replacement - there still time for him to cross the line for one of their four tries scored in the match.

Pirates 'Amateurs' 64 Launceston 'Castles' 5

15th. December, 2007

This was a game in which the Pirates played some fabulously flowing rugby football, it a tribute to the coaching of Paul Greaves. The threequarters ran riot, and the support play of forwards Julian Gwennap, Matt Pascoe and Scott Powell was outstanding.
The Pirates almost kept a clean sheet, only for that particular hope to be dashed when prop Matt Nicholas, who was loaned to the Launceston side for a spell, bulldozed aside his usual team mates before crashing over for the 'Castles' only try of the afternoon.

Pirates Amateurs: B. Quick, D. Hewett, A. Weston, A. Snell, N. Hosking, N. Glinski, T. Dugdale, S. Powell, M. Pascoe, W. Davey, M. Rashleigh, M. Nicholas, D. Lugg, A Gwennap, J. Gwennap.

Unbeaten this season, the Pirates Amateurs next game is a friendly at the Mennaye Field on Boxing Day against Brooksy's Barbarians. The game, which kicks off at 2pm, should provide some worthy festive entertainment - it also one which include a number of interesting family conflicts.

The George brothers, Nick and Mark, will be in opposition, as will Andrew Snell and Kelvin Snell, and Scott Dugdale and son Trevelyan.

Pirates Amateurs 22 Falmouth 12

8th December 2007

For this 'friendly' match the Pirates Amateurs showed 10 changes from the team that played St. Ives the previous week, the game also played with uncontested scrums, which nullified part of the Pirates attacking game plan.

The Pirates took the lead when hooker Lee Williams crashed over under the posts, it converted by fly-half Nathan Glinski, with their other points coming from tries scored by wing Nathan Hosking, full-back Ed Skewes and replacement Kevin Walsh.

Pirates Amateurs: E. Skewes, P. Grey, H. Lewis, A. Snell (capt), N. Hosking, M. Glinski, B. Quick, S. Powell, M. Pascoe, M. Rashleigh, Z. Harris, G. Pye, J. Gwennap, L. Williams, D. Lugg.

St. Ives 2nds 0 Pirates Amateurs 22

1st December 2007

A local 'derby' Merit Table game in the wind and rain at Alexandra Road was not one for the backs.

In a forward dominated affair, it was the visiting Pirates pack that gained the upper hand, their domination at scrummage and maul time helping lock Dave Lawrence to score two tries in the first half.

The hosts looked dangerous with ball in hand, but their limited chances were thwarted by the Pirates back-row as the visitors proceeded to score two more tries in the second forty through young full-back Aaron Hall and prop Matt Nicholas.

Pirates: A. Hall, E. Skewes, Hamish, A. Snell, N. Hosking, J. Trezise, T. Dugdale, T. Ball, W. Davey, T. Hands (capt), M. Pascoe, D. Lawrence, M. Nicholas, A. Gwennap, T. Williams.

Replacements: S. Dugdale, M. Grieg, D. Lugg, G. Pye, I. James, S. Powell (used); P. Grey, Z. Harris, M. Blewett (not used).

Scorers - tries: Lawrence (2), Hall, Nicholas; con: Trezise (1).

Pirates Amateurs 15 Newquay 2nds 5

24th. November, 2007

Following an Indian summer, the arrival some poor weather was inevitable, this 'friendly' game played at the Mennaye Field in pretty miserable conditions.

The visiting 'Hornets' took the lead with an early try at the clubhouse corner, it one which drew an immediate response from the home team which ended with wing Phil Grey scoring on his debut. Another feature of the match worth highlighting is that stalwart Scott Dugdale had the pleasure of playing in the same team has son Trevelyan, who normally captains the Pirates Colts. Both were busy, with Trevelyan impressing his senior colleagues.

The Pirates took the lead early in the second period thanks to a penalty kicked by James Trezise, the fly-half also adding the extras to a try scored by flanker Andrew Gwennap which secured a deserved victory.

Besides Trevelyan Dugdale, there were three other Colts who played for the Pirates on the day, namely George Pye, Hamish Lewis and Paul Thornton, all of whom did well.

Pirates Amateurs: B. Quick, P. Grey, H. Lewis, A. Snell, N. Hosking, J. Trezise, T. Dugdale, W. Davey (capt), S. Dugdale, A. Gwennap, G. Pye, M. Nicholas, D. Lugg, D. Bateman, J. Gwennap.
Replacements (all used): T. Williams, P. Thornton, D. Hewett, D. Lawrence, E. Skewes.

Scorers - tries: Grey, Gwennap; con: Trezise; pen: Trezise.

This coming Saturday 1st. December, the Pirates Amateurs have a Merit Table game away to St. Ives 2nds, kick-off at 2.30p.m.

Camborne 2nds 15 Pirates Amateurs 15

10th. November, 2007

A strong Camborne side played the better in the first half, before the Pirates hit back strongly before the interval with a rampaging charge and try scored by prop Treve 'Tank' Williams.

Introducing fresh legs for the second half, the power of replacement Dave Lawrence broke the Camborne defence, gifting scrum-half Ashley Weston space to put supporting flanker Matt Pascoe in for a try converted by fly-half Nathan Glinski.

With the scoreline reading 12-15, it looked like the Pirates could hold out for victory, but it was not to be, a successful penalty attempt enabling the 'Cherry & Whites' to earn them a draw.

Pirates Amateurs:
B. Quick, N. Hosking, H. Lewis, A. Snell (capt), D. Hewett, N. Glinski, A. Weston, T. Ball, M. Pascoe
M. Rashleigh, Z. Harris, M. Nicholas, D. Lugg, D. Bateman, T. Williams.

Pirates 2nds 35 Wadebridge 2nds 25

3rd. November, 2007

With both sides undefeated in this top of the Merit Table clash, a tough game was always likely, it ultimately proving to be just that. Yes, the Pirates led 18-3 at the break after their pack had taken control in the first period, but the Camels suddenly hit back at the start of the second half with three unanswered tries.

Home centre Tom McFadden unfortunately broke an arm, but the Pirates refused to buckle under the leadership of flanker Tony Hands, them finishing strongly to win the game with a penalty try and a try scored by replacement Zac Harris.

Thanks were due to Andrew Snell who had been selected to play for the Pirates, but kindly agreed to referee the match at late notice.

The Pirates Amateurs - fully recovered after having helped tow the fishing lugger 'Ripple' to her re-launch in Newlyn harbour on Friday afternoon - played their best rugby of the season in this friendly encounter played on the Mennaye Nurseries field against a strong Helston side.

Fly-half Nathan Glinski produced a full repertoire, scoring a try, a drop goal, a penalty and four conversions, whilst lock Rob Davies scored his first ever try for the tea .

Tom Ball had an excellent game playing at No. 8, with Tom McFadden also at his best in the centre.

Pirates 2nds 55 St. Ives 2nds 0

8th. September 2007

Arriving with a weakened front five, it was always likely that the visitors from St. Ives would struggle, and so it proved.

Domination at the set pieces enabled the Pirates to make good use of acquired possession as they ran in nine tries, the pick of which was an effort from Andrew Snell which saw him run 60 metres to the posts.
