Pirates U11s At Newbury Festival

The Pirates U11s travelled to the recent Newbury Festival where they competed against some of the best teams in the country - including an opener against London area champions Windsor.

The match was lost by just the one try scored in the game, the performance of the Pirates praised by the opposition coaches. Devon rivals Topsham were then beaten 25-0, the try-scorers Tom Holdsworth (3), Lockie Williams and Hamish Jeffrey, before a match against a physically big Jersey side was drawn 0-0.

The team's penultimate game in the tournament was against favourites Maidenhead , a try from centre Holdsworth earning the Pirates a deserved 5-0 victory.

Pirates U11s At Newbury Festival

In the last match, which was in the final of the shield competition, Huddersfield won 10-5. Asher Richards scored for the Pirates and the whole team had given 100 per cent. There were no complaints. The whole weekend was a fantastic experience, with due thanks expressed to the organisers.

Under 11 County Championship 25 March

Launceston was the venue for this years under 11s county champs on Sunday 25.3.07. the Pirates squad were placed in a pool with Penryn, Redruth, and Newquay.

In a exceptional display of good rugby managed to overcome all three teams without having a try scored against them.

The scores being Penryn 10-0, Redruth 20-0, and Newquay 20-0. It was straight through to the final to meet the other pool winner Truro, unfortunatly on the day Truro proved to strong and won 5-0 with a try in the second half.

Try scorers for the Pirates were - Tom Holdsworth 4, Lockran Williams 3, and Ed Holmes, Fred Ault, and Treeve Polglase with 1 each.

Well done to all the boys in the squad who played really well to reach the final.

Under 11s Match Reports

Mini tri tournament
Sunday 1st April 2007

On sunday the 1.4.07 the Pirates under 11s travelled over to Helston to play them and Falmouth in a mini tri tournament.

The first game played over two 10 minute periods saw the Pirates up against Helston. With the Penzance lads running at every opportunity tries were soon to come, but Helston were not going to let them have their own way all game - some tremendous tackling on the base line and in the centre kept the Pirates at bay for a while but with some direct running and good finishing the Pirates ran out worthy winners 30 -0. Tries were scored by Fred Ault, Ed Holmes, Tom Holdsworth,Mike Dunn,Asher Richards, and Jake Hole. No convertions because there were no posts.

The second game saw Falmouth take on Helston with two Penzance lads Tom Holdsworth and Asher Richards guesting for Falmouth. 15 - 0 was the score to Falmouth with Tom scoring 1 try and Asher 2.

The third game had Falmouth against Penzance with the score in favour of the Pirates lads 35 -0. Tries were scored through Lockran Williams, Ed Holmes, Mike Dunn, Phil Nicholas,Jake Hole Tom Sutton and Fred Ault. The man of the Matches was prop forward Mike Dunn. Thanks to everyone who turned out on a cold and windy afternoon and taking part in our warm-up games leading up to our trip to the Newbury Festival.

St. Ives U11s 11 Pirates U11s 38
Sunday 11th. March 2007

At a windy St. Ives the Pirates put out a Development side, one which completed the double over their near neighbours.

St. Ives were strong in the scrum, but could match their opponents in broken play. Tries for the Pirates were scored by Tom Holdsworth (2), man of the match Treeve Polglase who had just flown in from Florida (2), Jake Hole and Mike Dunn. Skipper and fly-half Sam Coogan kicked four conversions

Pirates U11s 0 Penryn U11s 0
Sunday 25th. February 2007

This game was hard fought and as close as the scoreline suggests, and genuinely entertaining.. The well matched sides both showed a willingness to run with the ball, Tom Holdsworth going closest to scoring for the Pirates, but on the day it was the defences that held firm.

A second game followed for the development teams, three converted tries giving the visitors a 21-0 win. Sam Coogan was unlucky not to cross for a try, but he was bundled into touch touch just short of the line. The team's tackling and commitment was excellent, Lewis Wells setting the example and winning the 'Man of the Match' award for the second time this season

Wadebridge U11s 0 Pirates U11s 31
Sunday 18th. February, 2007

The Pirates won this particular game comfortably enough with tries scored by Tom Holdsworth, Lockran Williams, Asher Richards, Mike Dunn and Ed Holmes. Ollie Hallworth kicked three conversions.

In a second match that followed the 'Development' side took on the same Wadebridge opposition who reversed the result to this time give them a 31-0 win. The young Pirates tackled and covered like demons, no more so than Kianon Dayus, Sam Coogan, and man of the match Zac Roberts.

Both games were played with nine a side because Wadebridge could't field a full team.

Pirates U11s 40 Newquay Hornets U11s 7
Sunday 28th. January

This was a game in which the Newquay team tackled themselves to a standstill, but it was still not enough to stop the free flowing Pirates from recording a convincing win.

Scorers - tries: Lockran Williams (3), Tom Holdsworth (2), Fred Ault; cons: Ollie Hallworth (5).

A second game followed for a Pirates 'development' side against the same Newquay team, who fronted up well well in their second match. However, a committed Pirates display was enough to give them a 12-7 win.

Scorers - tries: Jacob Perry (his first of the season), Tom Holdsworth (man of the match); con: Sam Coogan.

Pirates U11s v Newquay U11s
Sunday 28th. January

The pirates under 11s played newquay at home and ran out deserved winners in two games. the first game brought the two A sides together, in what was an exciting match. newquay played their part and tackled themselves to a standstill but could not prevent the pirates running away with the game and winning 40 - 7. six tries were scored - 3 from lockran williams, 2 from tom holdsworth and 1 from fred ault. 5 were converted by ollie hallworth. both forwards and backs combined really well and created lots of scoring chances.

in the second game the development side faced newquay A for their second game of the morning. fair play to newquay who had just played a hard game and were up for another. this was another good game with lots of commitment from both sets of boys, great tackling and support led to a fine win for the pirates second string over last years cornwall champions by two tries to one - the first from jacob perry ( his first try for the season, well done jacob. ) and the second from tom holdsworth, one conversion from sam coogan. final score 12 - 7. man of the match - tom holdsworth. well done tom and everyone who played.

finally, thanks to andy and the newquay lads who travelled down with depleted numbers but still fronted up and played some good rugby in what was two very hard games.

Pirates U11s 7 Redruth U11s 0
Sunday 21st. January

This game was evenly contested and much enjoyed by a good-sized crowd. Prop Mike Dunn scored the one try in the match, his effort converted by Olly Hallworth.

A second game for the 'Development' side followed against Redruth 'A', it no disgrace that this less experienced home team lost 30-0. A new player joining the Pirates ranks, Lewis Wells, was adjudged man of the match.

Pirates U11s 49 - Redruth U11s 14
21st January 2007

the pirates under 11s took on their counterparts from redruth at the mennaye field. a very evenly contested game was watched by a good sporting crowd, with the pirates coming out on top by one try to nil scored by prop mike dunn and converted by olly hallworth. but the penzance outfit didnt have things all their own way with redruth playing their part in a good match.

The second game saw the development team take on the might of the redruth A side and come off a creditable second best. beaten 30-0 was no discrace for a young team with lots of new players who are still gelling as a team. lots of good tackling and tons of support kept the pirates in the game for long periods but the powerful redruth 12 overwhelmed them in the end. new player to the ranks lewis wells was voted by his fellow players man of the match.

Pirates U11s Development 38 St. Ives U11s 5
10th. December, 2006

This was a fine win for a very useful Pirates Development side against spirited St. Ives opponents, who never gave up. Conditions on the day were not ideal, it great credit that the home team notched up six tries in the match.

Wing Jake Hole scored two, with there one a piece for Sam Vernon, Hamish, Jeffrey, fred Ault and Mike Dunn, four of which were converted by man of the match Sam Coogan.

Pirates U11s 49 - Camborne U11s 14
3rd. December, 2006

This match, played at he Mennaye Nurseries field on Sunday morning, was reduced to 10 a side because the visitors arrived short of players.

Joel Matevesi was an impressive fly-half for the 'Cherry & Whites' , scoring one of their two converted tries before being injured, him replaced by a sporting young Sam Coogan from the Pirates.

A hat-trick from Tom Holdsworth, a brace from Lockran Williams, plus a try a piece for Ed Holmes and debutant winger Hamish Jeffrey, all converted by a jubilant and in-form Ollie Hallworth, ultimately gave the Pirates a convincing victory, their just reward for a workmanlike performance from backs and forwards alike.

Penryn U11s 7 - Pirates U11s 7
26th. November, 2006

This game, played on a sunny November's morning, provided an interesting contest, Penryn having a useful pack of forwards, but the Pirates superior in the backs.

All the points were notched up in the first half, Lockran Williams running well to cut back inside to score the one try for the Pirates, his effort converted by Ollie Hallworth.

A second game followed for the clubs 'development' sides, Penryn's superiority at the scrummage providing the platform for their 14-0 points victory. Sam Vernon was man of the match in a Pirates team that competed well on the day, and are also, importantly, learning.

Truro U11s 42 Pirates U11s 14
19th. November, 2006

This game at St. Clement's Hill, Truro, was played over four quarters. The first quarter was drawn 0-0, with the remaining three all won by the home side (14-7, 14-7, 14-0).

It was felt that the constant changing of teams did not help the Pirates style of play, but credit to Truro for tackling well around the fringes and making the most of turnover ball.

Ed Holmes scored both of the Pirates tries, with the conversions kicked by Sam Coogan and Olly Hallworth. 'Man of the Match' for the Pirates was Lockran Williams.

Pirates v Abbercrave
October 29th, 2006

On Sunday 29.10.06 the Pirates Under 11s hosted the Welsh touring side Abercrave. In two keenly contested games the young Pirates boys came off a creditable second best.

The A side were first to play, and the Welsh opposition soon showed their class with 3 quick tries all converted to make the score at half time 21 - 0. In the second half the Pirates had the better of their opponents but could not put any scores on the board. 3 boys who showed up well for the Penzance outfit were Lockran Williams, Michael Dunn and Asher Richards.

To be fair to the home side who were gracious in defeat, they were not allowed to push in the scrums (because the Welsh continuum does not allow it untill under 13 level) so one of their attacking options was taken from them. But all in all for a side that has only lost twice in 3 years the Abercrave boys were well worth their win.

Te development side played next and put up a great fight against vastly superior opponents, going down by 4 tries to nil in a very good game. Tackling and covering like demons they frustrated their more experienced opponents. The home side almost scored twice through second row Mike Dunn who had an excellent game (and received the man of the match award from the coachs) great covering tackles from Kainan Dayus and Sam Coogan stopped further tries being scored as the game came to an end.

Coaches note. Both sides were well beaten by really well drilled and clever opponents - lots and lots to work on in training after this very loud wake up call

Redruth 0 Pirates 35
October 15th, 2006

The Under 11's had their first away match of the season at Redruth. Just like last year the Redruth forward pack were very strong and well drilled, tying up the Pirate forwards preventing them from releasing the backs. Time and time again the young Pirates lost out in the rucks and mauls but never gave up.

Then after 10 minutes of the first half the ball made it out to the backs and they launched an attack that took them to the Redruth try line and on for their first try. That was the turning point of the game. Although Redruth still battled with their forwards the Pirate backs scored four more unanswered tries. The final score of 35 - 0 did not reflect the closeness of the game.

Try scorers - Jasper Wyant, Ben Martin, Lockran Williams, Josh Nichols, Oliver Hallworth.
Conversions - 5 Oliver Hallworth

The second match using the Pirate development side proved to be another hard fought game for the youngsters from Penzance. The Redruth forwards were able to dominate the game far more. They showed that against a less experienced side that they too could bring their backs into the game. The young Pirates never gave up and continued tackling to the final whistle. The end score being 26 - 0 to Redruth.

Pirates 28 Launceston 0
Sunday 1st October Penzance & Newlyn nursery field

Pirates under 11s first match at this age level.

Their opponents Launceston brought down with them a big pack and a very determined attitude. First up were the pirates A side who are beginning to gel together well.

Starting the game at pace and putting the ball wide paid dividends right away with 4 good tries being scored in quick succession. First to score was new wing Hamish Jeffrey, quickly followed by pre season signing from Redruth, Lockran Williams - next to score was Asher Richards, then lastly Oliver Hallworth selling a great dummy to go over. All 4 tries were converted by Oliver Hallworth.

Next to take the field were the development side, fielding 3 lads completely new to the game - and they all came through very well. The score being 24 - 19 to the young Pirates was a fair reflection on the game. The teams being much more evenly matched, Launceston scoring three superb tries of their own 2 being converted. But the penzance lads came up with 4 tries, 2 from new lad and a great prospect for the future Kianon Dayus, 1 from Treeve Polglase and 1 from another new young lad Jake Hole. 1 being converted by Oliver Hallworth and the other by fly-half and captain Sam Coogan.

A very impressive start to the season, which will do for now, but there is much to work on in training.
