Record breaking Cup win for Pirates

Pirates U14s 34 St. Ives 0
Sunday 25th. March, 2007

Having encountered two hard fought contests earlier in the competition, the Pirates put on a strong display to dismiss a spirited St. Ives XV at Redruth in the County Final.

The win secured for the team a sixth consecutive mini/juniors County Final title, a record for Penzance & Newlyn RFC. A strong performance from the pack enabled the side to dominate the flow of play and constantly pressurise the St. Ives defence, the penetrative running of the backs proving too much for St. Ives to contain - though they deserved full credit for their determination and commitment throughout.

match Reports

Pirates U14s 8 Penryn U14s 5
Sunday 11th. March, 2007

The Pirates U14s fought a nail-biting Cornwall Cup semi-final win against an impressive Penryn side who took a first half lead with an unconverted try. Indeed, but for some impressive cover tackling the Pirates could easily have been further behind at the break.

In the second half, with the wind now in their favour, the home side at last built momentum, the forwards providing the platform from where deep inside the Penryn '22' skipper Luke Cowan Dickie crashed over the whitewash to level the scores. The conversion was again missed.

At 5-all, tension was a little too high as the Pirates now pressed for a match-winning score, one ultimately secured thanks to a penalty successfully slotted by centre Luke Johnson.
The Pirates will now play St. Ives in the final on Sunday 25th. March.
