Under 10s fixtures & match reports season 2005-2006 Awards & Season Highlights 2005/06
Match Reports 30/4/06 Pirates 15 Newquay 5 This was a very competitive game with fantastic tackling, the Pirates keeping their unbeaten record intact thanks to tries scored by Tom Sutton, Philip Nicholas and Ed Holmes. 30/4/06 Pirates Development 25 Newquay Development 0 This was another cracking game, with great tackling and rucking from both sides. An excellent individual try for Zac Roberts set the ball rolling for the Pirates, with others following for George Hollis, Dillon Tree, Phil Nicholas, and man-of-the-match debutant prop Mike Dunn. 2/4/06 The Cornwall U10s County Championship The Cornwall U10s County Championship festival took place at Truro RFC with the Pirates entering two teams Penzance, and Newlyn! Newlyn played against the strong Truro and Liskeard-Looe teams in their first two games, losing both 30-0 despite showing plenty of commitment. They also then lost to Wadebridge 20-5, but put up a better performance with our one try scored by Inigo King. The Penzance side won their opener against Falmouth 30-0, with tries scored by Tom Holdsworth (3), Fred Ault, Asher Richards and Josh Nicholls. Another 30-5 win then followed against Saltash, our try-scorers being Fred Ault (2), Tom Holdsworth (2), Treeve Polglase and Tom Sutton, the victory securing a semi-final place against Newquay. That game proved to be as close as it gets, both sides giving it their all, and neither conceding any points, it then cruelly being decided by a toss of the coin who would go through. In the event, the toss went against us, with Newquay going on to become the Champions by beating Truro 5-0 in the final. Our lads were naturally disappointed, but they had played very well and had showed great sportsmanship, with them now already looking forward to competing in the Newbury festival later in the month.
12/3/06 - Pirates Development side 0 - Helston 30 Despite the tackling efforts of centre William Short, our team were unable to match a strong Helston side. 12/3/06 - Pirates 30 - Helston 0 Our run of good form continued with this convincing win, tries being scored by Josh Nicholls, Asher Richards, Ed Holmes, Oliver Hallworth and Fred Ault. All the players, including those in the Development side, are training hard, with good luck expressed for when they compete in the County U10s Festival on the 2/4/06. 5/3/06 - Lankelly-Fowey 0 Pirates 30 On a cold but sunny Sunday at Wadebridge the Pirates U10s played a round robin competition with Wadebridge, Lankelly-Fowey, and Fulham prep high school (London). First up were a spirited Lankelly-Fowey side who we comfortably defeated - despite the efforts of our own Taylor Lewis who had an outstanding game when loaned to the opposition! Try-scorers were Treeve Polglase (2), Jasper Wyant, Josh Nicholls, Ed Holmes, and new prop Ben Martin. 5/3/06 - Fulham prep high school 0 - Pirates 10 This was a short six minutes each way game against a side coached by South African schoolteachers, the school in Cornwall for a weekend of rugby. Our try-scorers were Phil Nicholas and Tom Sutton. 5/3/06 - Wadebridge 5 - Pirates 25 This was a fine victory against our hosts, with livewire scrum-half Treeve Polglase securing a hat-trick. Other try-scorers were George Hollis, who had his best game of the season, and new fly-half Oliver Hallworth. 12/2/06 - The U10s welcomed Lankelly-Fowey for a first meeting between the two teams. It was decided to play two matches, the outcome being that the pirates mixed the development side with their stronger 'A' team. The Pirates won 30-0 with tries scored by Jasper Wyant (3), Josh Nicholls (2), and Treve Polglase. The second game ended in a draw, it being a fair result. Ed Holmes (2) and Tom Holdsworth scored our tries, whilst special words of sporting praise are due Pirates hooker Asher Richards for playing for the visitors. However, we'll have to forgive him for then proceeding to score all of their points with a hat-trick! Ben Rollason, our scrum-half, unfortunately had to visit hospital with a suspected broken nose. We wish him a speedy recovery. 5/2/06 - PIRATES 30 - WADEBRIDGE 10 The Pirates overcame a big visiting side to record a fine win, with the match well refereed by coach Terry Coogan. Try-scorers were Tom Holdsworth (2), Josh Nicholls (2), Phil Nicholas, and 'man of the match' Asher Richards. A match for the Development team followed, which was lost 30-15. Stan Hall scored two of our tries, with the other coming from Dillon Tree. 29/1/06 - PIRATES 'A' 25 - PENRYN 5 Playing only their third game of the season, the side recorded an excellent win against one of the best teams in the county. Raising their game collectively, it was a brilliant team performance. Man-of-the-Match Tom Holdsworth scored 3 tries, with the other two going to wing Ed Holmes. 29/1/06 - PIRATES Development team 0 - PENRYN 'A' 30 The Penryn team proved too strong for our inexperienced side whose tackling efforts are improving - keep it up lads! 22/1/06 - Game 1 - FALMOUTH 0 - PIRATES 30 Game 1 - Falmouth gave a good account of themselves but could not stop the more able Pirates team. Try-scorers were Ed Holmes, Tom Sutton, Tom Holdsworth, Asher Richards and Treeve Polglase. Prop Sam Vernon had another splendid game. Game 2 - FALMOUTH 5 - PIRATES 30 The Pirates playing in this match were also too strong against a sporting and plucky home selection. Tries were scored by Jasper Wyant, Josh Nicholls, Fred Ault and Indigo Kingi. 8/1/06 -'A' side fixture - REDRUTH 5 - PIRATES 25 - 5-0 down in the opening minutes, the lads fought their way back to score tries through Ed Holmes (2), Tom Holdsworth, Fred Ault and Asher Richards. Oliver Hallworth played very well at fly-half and Dillon Tree had a good debut on the wing. Development match - Redruth 30 - Pirates 0 - The 'Reds' proved strong opposition against a spirited Pirates team who were skippered by Zac Roberts. Outstanding for us on the day were Sam Vernon and Jacob Perry. Report on matches played at Newquay on the 11th. Dec., 2005:- The Pirates U10s took two teams to NEWQUAY, both returning home with sound victories under their belts. First up was the development side led by George Hollis, who scored two tries in the match. Others try-scorers were Inigo Kingi (3) and scrum-half Zac Roberts. The final result was 30-5 , but credit was still due our opponents who in fairness were better than the scoreline indicates. The 'A' team then took the field, welcoming their first return to playing action in six weeks. When the action began it was fairly close up front, but we had the edge outside. Try scorers in the 25-0 victory were prop Fred Ault (2), Treeve Polglase, Asher Richards, and flying winger Josh Nicholls. Well done to all 4 sides!
The development side lost their game by four tries to one, our sole score coming from gifted centre Ed Holmes. The team was well led by fly-half Sam Coogan, with there being special praise due Oliver Hallworth, William Short and Dillon Tree, who were all making their debuts. On a more sombre note, however, young Ben Rollason broke his collar-bone, us all wishing him a speedy recovery U10 V Falmouth - AWAY In the second game the Pirates development side gave a good account of themselves in beating Falmouth B 20- 5. Tries were scored by Asher Richards (2), Ed Holmes and our new signing from Bournemouth, Dillon Tree. Well done to all the boys who took part in what were virtually monsoon conditions. U10 v REDRUTH at Home on Sunday 23.10.05 The Pirates under 10s, playing their third game of the season, overcame a very good Redruth team by 25 - 10. It was hard but fair, the match witnessed by good -sized sporting crowd. Our try-scorers were Tom Holdsworth (2), Ed Holmes (2) and Treeve Polglase. A second game was played after with the development side taking on Redruth A, there being a great display of covering and tackling by the youngsters who are just learning the game. We lost 30 - 0, but there were good performances put in by Stan Hall, Sam Vernon and William Short. THANKS to Gerry Coogan, Durinda Outram, Demelza Taylor, Nicola Sampson, Jan Williams, Kerry Wearne & Wendy Nicholas who have been helping with fundraising during our home matches. Nearly £300 has been raised so far. More help is needed.
